Valheim World Modifiers and Settings Explained
Valheim2 min readUpdated Oct 22, 2026
Valheim's world modifiers, the ones you see when you start a new single player world, are available on your server too. They are on the Game Settings page, together with the name, password and save settings, and this page explains what each one does.
Where to Find Them
- Log in to your game panel and click your Valheim server.
- Open Game Settings in the left menu. Save your changes and restart the server; Valheim reads them on start.
Name, Password and Listing
- Server Name is what players see in the list.
- Server Password is needed to join. It has to be at least 5 characters and may not be part of the world name; a listed server always needs one.
- Show in Server List puts the server in Valheim's community list. Off, players join with Join IP or the join code.
- Crossplay lets Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch 2 and Game Pass players play together. Console players join with the join code from the Console page.
- World Name is the world the server loads, or creates when it does not exist yet. See how to upload or switch worlds.
World Preset and Modifiers
- World Preset is the master switch. Keep leaves the world's modifiers as they are. Any other preset (Normal is the standard game, then Casual, Easy, Hard, Hardcore, Immersive and Hammer) is applied on every start together with the modifiers below.
- Combat Difficulty sets how dangerous enemies are, from very easy to very hard.
- Death Penalty sets what you lose on death, from casual (keep everything) to hardcore.
- Resource Rate multiplies what drops and what you gather.
- Raids sets how often enemies raid your base, from none to much more.
- Portals restricts what goes through portals: casual lets every item through, hard and very hard restrict them further.
- No Build Cost, Player Based Raids, Passive Enemies and No Map are the toggles from the single player menu.
The modifiers only apply when World Preset is not Keep. To change one thing, set the preset to Normal and adjust the modifier.
Saves and Backups
- Autosave Interval is the time between world saves, 1800 seconds (30 minutes) by default.
- World Backups is how many copies Valheim keeps next to the world. Every copy is a full world, so more copies use more disk.
- First Backup Interval and Later Backup Interval set how often those copies are made.
Good to Know
- Modifiers are saved in the world. Once applied, they stay with that world even if you set the preset back to Keep.
- Extra Launch Arguments on the Game Settings page take any Valheim command line option, for example
-resetmodifiersto clear every modifier once. Leave it empty if you are not sure. - Mod Loader, Game Branch and the BepInEx and ValheimPlus versions are on the same page; they are covered in how to install mods.
Finished
Your world plays the way you want. If you changed the death penalty or the raids, tell the crew before the next session.
