How to Update Your Valheim Server
Valheim2 min readUpdated Oct 22, 2026
After a Valheim patch, players who updated cannot join a server that has not. Your server updates itself on every start, and the panel can restart it the moment Iron Gate publishes an update, so the crew never sees a version error.
Updates on Start
- Log in to your game panel and click your Valheim server.
- Open Game Settings and check that Auto Update is on. It is on by default. Every start then updates the game, and ValheimPlus when its version is set to latest.
Restart When an Update Is Published
- Open Restarts in the left menu.
- Turn on Restart on updates. The panel watches the Valheim server app on Steam and restarts your server when a new build appears.
- Set a daily restart at a quiet hour on the same page. Valheim saves the world when it stops, so nothing is lost.
Update by Hand
- Press Restart on the Console page. With Auto Update on, that is the whole update.
Good to Know
- Valheim cannot warn players from the console, so a restart comes without an in-game message. The world is saved on stop; players lose nothing but the session.
- Mods break on patch day. BepInEx mods often need a few days after a Valheim update. Set Game Branch to
default_oldon the Game Settings page to stay on the previous release, reinstall the server from the Settings page, and switch back topublicwhen the mods are updated. See how to install mods. - Pin the mod loader. BepInEx Version and ValheimPlus Version on the Game Settings page accept a fixed version instead of latest, for a server that has to stay exactly as it is.
Finished
The server updates itself and restarts when Valheim does. If a world refuses to load after an update, see how to upload or switch worlds for the backups Valheim keeps.
