How to Make Yourself Admin on Your Valheim Server
Valheim2 min readUpdated Oct 22, 2026
Valheim keeps its admins in a text file on the server. Put your id in it, restart, and the in-game console gives you the admin commands.
Find Your Id
- Steam: your SteamID64, a 17 digit number. Open your Steam profile in a browser; with a custom profile URL, paste it into a site such as steamid.io to get the number.
- Xbox, PlayStation, Switch 2 and Game Pass: the platform id Valheim shows under your name in the server's player list, or in the console log line when you connect.
Add Yourself to the Admin List
- Log in to your game panel and click your Valheim server.
- Open Files and go to
.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim. - Open
adminlist.txt, add your id on its own line below the comment lines, and save. - Restart the server. Valheim reads the list on start.
Use the Console in the Game
- The in-game console is off by default. In Steam, right click Valheim, open Properties, and add
-consoleto the launch options. - In the game press F5 to open the console. As an admin these work on the server:
kick nameandban nameremove a player;unban nameandbannedmanage the ban list.savewrites the world to disk right away, for example before a restart.devcommandsturns on the cheat commands for you, such asgodorfly. Use them for events and building, not during normal play.
Good to Know
- The other lists in the same folder work the same way:
bannedlist.txtfor bans andpermittedlist.txtfor a whitelist. A non-empty permitted list lets only those ids join. - The Players page in the panel shows who is online, so you can look up a name before you kick.
- Admins have no special protection in the game. Being admin is about managing players and the world, not about surviving longer.
Finished
You are admin. The next thing most owners set up is a daily restart and automatic updates.
