How to Get a Steam Game Server Login Token for Your Garry's Mod Server
Garry's Mod2 min readUpdated Oct 24, 2026
A Game Server Login Token lets your Garry's Mod server show up in the public server browser. You make the token on Steam and paste it into the game panel. You do not need a token to run the server or to join it by address.
Create the Token on Steam
- Open
steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameserversin your browser and log in with your Steam account. - Scroll to the bottom of the page. Find Create a new game server account.
- In App ID, type
4000. This is the ID of Garry's Mod. - In Memo, type a name you will recognise, for example
My GMod server. - Press Create.
Copy the Token
- Look at the list of game server accounts on the same page.
- Find the row you just made and copy the code from the Login Token column.
Paste the Token in the Panel
- Log in to your game panel and click your Garry's Mod server.
- Open Game Settings in the left menu, under GAME SERVER.
- Go to the Steam section.
- Paste the token into Game Server Login Token.
- The panel saves the field by itself. A yellow bar at the top says Settings saved. Restart the server to apply your changes.
Restart the Server
- Open Console in the left menu.
- Press Restart.
- Wait until the status next to the server name reads RUNNING.
Changes on the Game Settings page only apply after a restart.
Good to Know
- The token must be made for App ID 4000. A token made for another game does not work for Garry's Mod.
- Limited Steam accounts cannot make tokens. If Steam does not let you create one, check that your account is not limited.
- A token that is not used for a long time expires. If your server has been offline for a long while, make a new token and paste it in.
- Steam can reject a token at start. The panel then opens an Invalid GSL token! popup by itself. Paste a new token in the GSL Token field and press Update GSL Token. The panel saves it and restarts the server.
- Do not share your token. Treat it like a password.
Finished
Your server now has a login token. Next, change the gamemode and map to set up the server the way you want to play.
